Video to Film

Over at DV.com in an article called “HDV to Film: A Real-World Test” (registration required), John Jackman takes on the task of testing different HDV workflows—SD DVD, HD for broadcast, and 35mm film transfer. Production took place in the middle of last year, before the major NLE’s introduced native HDV support, but nevertheless Jackson was more than satisfied with the results:

“After some discussion, [we] agreed that the [blowup] looked very much like a blowup from 16 mm… All agreed that the result was watchable, and that an average audience wouldn’t notice the differences if the other aspects of story and filmmaking craft were right.”

And for those of you interested in knowing how HVX200 footage looks after it’s been transferred, there’s a lengthly thread over at DVXUser.com—the overall verdict: it seems to be that it holds up very well!
