Insomniac

My Quad G5 has never slept. If you tell it to sleep the screens will go dark, but after a few moments the fans will whir into life and it will sit there roaring until you disturb it. While we were in heavy production last semester I wasn’t going to let it trouble me—especially as all else seemed to be functioning properly—but even so, I asked around locally and no-one had a diagnosis. Once the semester ended I gave a AppleCare a call and spread my enquiry further. I left for the UK with the matter still unresolved and it’s taken me a while to get back to it. Eventually I gave Divine Mac a call. Well, all kudos to them, they dug up an answer, and frankly I’m embarrassed to admit that it’s noted in a KB document, “Mac OS X: Apple Fibre Channel and SCSI PCI Card Can Prevent Deep Sleep” I somehow missed! Apparently it’s a known behaviour if you’re in a similar position you should just set your Energy Saver Preferences so that your system never sleeps.
