While reports are surfacing that FCS 2 is shipping (!), Apple have posted a raft of new manuals online, including the must read Final Cut Pro 6 User Manual (PDF), Final Cut Pro 6 Working With High Definition and Broadcast Formats (PDF), and Final Cut Pro 6: New Features (PDF).

I notice it says the upgrade doesn’t work with acedemic versions. Does that mean that those of us who purchased with an acedemic discount can’t upgrade for $550, or is there a special ‘acedemic version’? It doesn’t indicate any such difference on my version.

The only difference between the academic and commercial versions of FCS is the end user license agreement—the software is the same.

You cannot upgrade academic versions of FCS. The recent crossgrade promotion was an exception to that rule. If you own the academic version you either have to buy the full commerical version or the full academic version this time around.
