Read All About It

One of the hot topics at this week’s VFCPUG meeting was Apple’s new ProRes 422 codec - it certainly seemed to turn some heads at NAB too! It looked great projected on the big screen in the Apple Booth and from where I was it was indistinguishable from the Uncompressed HD source in a side-by-side comparison. I think a lot of us are eager to see how it performs in day-to-day use. There’s also a lot of interest in technical details of the format, how it’s expected to work, and what we’ll be able to do with it. If you’re craving more information the White Paper, “Apple ProRes 422” (PDF) may satisfy some of your needs.

The document includes a fairly detailed description of the format and the intended workflow, as well as information on target data rates and storage requirements for different flavours of video.

If you’re moving quickly, AppleInsider has posted a concise summary of the major points. Matt Geller has also been offering some details on the Xsanity forum about how ProRes 422 will impact Xsan and Final Cut Server.

UPDATE 27 April 2007: In the VFCPUG forum, Matt’s also digging into ProRes 422 - I told you it’s a hot topic!
