“Maximum memory usage in Final Cut Pro is 2.5 GB” is one of the KB documents I find particularly interesting. Why? Well, it’s a subject that comes up frequently and in my experience it’s something that frequently catches people of guard. Conventional wisdom is that more RAM you install in your system the better performance you’ll get. This isn’t so with FCP (and most other applications with a GUI in the current version of Mac OS X, Tiger). According to the article and the engineers I spoke with while researching the Optimizing Your Final Cut Pro System book, unlike Motion, Final Cut Pro is able to address a maximum of 2.5GB of RAM even if you have more than 4GB installed.

Whether this will all change with Leopard and a future version of FCP remains to be seen, but for now it’s something to consider when you’re configuring your dream system.
