Marking Time

Ken Stone has begun the new year with a comprehensive introduction to XML and Final Cut Studio by Philip Hodgetts. The article, “What is XML and what does it mean for Final Cut Studio users?” begins with an overview of the language structure and uses, before exploring how it is harnessed by a range of third-party applications (including Automatic Duck) to expand your workflow options. The number of tools already working with XML is impressive and Hodgetts predicts that we’ll only see more. The key to success of XML is that it is an open standard intended to be accessible to both humans and computers. The trick, and it’s a big one, is understanding the different implementations and as Wes Plate commented when he was here last month, with FCS it’s also about knowing which parts of the project file are accessible to developers working with XML.

Ultimately, if you’re interested in extending the features of FCS as a user or a developer, or you’re out to speculate on features in Final Cut Studio 6 (if that’s what it will be called) XML integration is something to watch.
