FCP 6.0.1
One of the least discussed changes to FCP in version 6 is the revised approach to accessing information about software updates. Gone are the Late Breaking News PDF documents, in their place we now have sleek online “Release Notes”.
The new Final Cut Pro 6.0.1 includes several new features, the biggest is primary support for AVCHD media, which many were surprised not to see in the initial release announced at NAB. According to the accompanying documentation AVCHD, like its solid state brethren, is imported using the Log and Tansfer window. AVCHD is transcoded during the ingest process to either ProRes 422 or the Apple Intermediate Codec—take note that the size of the new media file will be significantly larger as a result.
FCP 6.0.1 also includes the Defocus filter, which was curiously missing from 6.0, and favourite effects can now be preserved when you upgrade from version 5. Long filenames (up to 255 characters) are now supported when you’re working in a SAn environment. You should also be aware that if you’ve changed the name of your Final Cut Pro application, it will not be recognised by Software Update.
Speaking of which, once you’ve installed Pro Application Update 2007-01 you can download FCP 6.0.1 via Software Update or by direct download if you prefer.
