Countdown
If you haven’t yet taken advantage of the Final Cut Studio “Crossgrade” program you don’t have long to get your discs in the post. All orders must be postmarked 20 December 2006. What the upgrade paths will be after the current promotion closes is anyone’s guess. If you have earlier versions of the software or are thinking of switching to an Intel-based Mac this is a very attractive offer and the only way for FCP 5.0.x users to remain current.
UPDATE 20 December 2006: After all that, news is filtering in that Apple have extended the crossgrade promotion until 19 March 2007. At the time of posting the Canadian forms are still to be updated, but their US counterparts clearly state the revised date.

What is this for? If I’ve got a PowerPC version of FCP 5.x I won’t be able to upgrade later at a low price? What if I’ve already got the latest updates to my PPC version?
The Universal version of FCP runs on both Intel and PPC Mac systems.
There are differences between the 5.0.x (PPC) versions of FCP and 5.1.x (Universal) versions, including the revised video scopes and FxPlug support, as well compatibility with a wider range of hardware devices and formats. I’ve posted about the updates, but you should consult the Late Breaking News documentation for more details.
I have no idea what upgrades will cost once the promotion ends, but I’d be surprised if the price stays as low.
Thanks for clarifying. I have version 5.1.2 - is this upgrade still recommended then, or is it only for those who are still using the 5.0.x versions?
Thanks
You already have it. 5.1.2 is the most current version of the software today.
The reminder is for those folks who have yet to upgrade to 5.1.
