If you’ve been holding out since NAB for Sony to release their XDCAM HD software component for FCP*, the interminable wait is over! Available as a direct download from the Sony Business Solutions & Systems site, the package includes, XDCAM FAM driver, XDCAM Transfer standalone application, Sony XDCAM Import plug-on for FCP, Sony XDCAM Export plug-on for FCP, several new FCP presets, and a detailed manual.

Contrary to what it says on the Sony site, their new software requires Final Cut Pro 5.1.1 (or higher) and Pro Applications Update 2006-01.

Installation was straightforward (though it requires you reboot your system) and the workflow that’s outlined in the support document is well described. Launching FCP reveals new menu items, import options, and presets.

If you’re in the US you may still have an opportunity to catch one of the dates on the Apple/Sony “Mobile Editing” tour**, which focuses on XDCAM HD workflow. I’m hoping that Apple Canada will be able to bring similar events across to our side of the border.
