Over the last couple of weeks the mysteries of Panasonic’s P2 solid-state media card technology have been a hot topic on the video-centric web.

First Josh Oakhurst relayed the sorry tale of Tommy D (a DV.com forum user) who eventually abandoned P2 in the middle of production to revert to SDX900 and a proven tape-based workflow. The moral of the story is not that P2 is intrinsically flawed, but that testing your workflow is always, always paramount. But you didn’t need, Tommy, Josh, or I to tell you that!

Shane Ross over at Little Frog in HiDef is chronicling a very different experience with P2. Having reported on how he convinced Panasonic to provide his team with some of the first HVX200 units and his experience working with laptop transfer, he’s just posted an account in which he describes using the the P2 store portable drive.

Not to be left out, last week, Apple published an 18-page document, “Workflow for Final Cut Pro and the Panasonic AG-HVX200 HD Camera” (PDF), which covers P2, capturing vs. ingesting, shooting modes, and the steps involved in working with P2 footage and FCP 5.

Thanks for the posts Jonathan, especially the new one from Shane Ross. He does a good job of going through his workflow. It was quite an interesting read. Though post NAB perhaps it’ll be outdated and new workflows for new technologies will be needed.

Anyone thinking about P2 though should definitely give it a read. It may be especially helpful to watch his online tutorial of importing the materials into FCP 5. Nothing mind boggling there, but certainly not bad to take a couple of minutes to listen to someone who’s already done it.

Cheers.

I will be working the Panasonic booth at NAB this year, going over this workflow. I highly doubt it will change in the near future.

Feel free to drop by and introduce yourselves.

Thanks Shane, I shall definitely do that.

I look forward to seeing you there.
