After years of speculation* the Apple iPhone has been announced! This morning Steve Jobs spent the lion’s share of his keynote address at MWSF demonstrating the many features of their latest product.

Controlled with one button and a patented “multi-touch” display, the OS X** powered, iPhone integrates mobile phone technology, with a widescreen iPod, and Internet communications. You can use it to make calls, play your iTunes media, browse the web and send email.

Representatives from Google, Yahoo, and Cingular got up on stage to add their endorsement to the product, which Apple are hoping to ship to customers in the US in June once the FCC approves it.***

*I recall a wise someone saying to me in the summer of 2003 that they though an Apple cellphone was inevitable, if for no other reason than Steve Jobs must use one and he couldn’t picture him happy with any of the current offerings. With today’s announcement it would seem he was spot on!

**As a side note, Apple appear to have dropped the “Mac” from the name of their handheld operating system.

***Apple are aiming for a European debut late 2007, but they’ve not mentioned Canada and there’s currently no iPhone page on the Apple Canada web site.

UPDATE 12 January 2007: As conjecture continues about the iPhone continues, David Pogue — who is one of the privileged few to have some hands-on time with one of the current units — has published a comprehensive FAQ. Speaking of speculation, John Gruber has a theory that the iPhone is using an ARM processor.

Furthermore, Rogers are making noises about bringing the iPhone to Canada!

And if you still haven’t read enough about the reinvention of the phone, Jason Kottke has a comprehensive round-up!

UPDATE 17 January 2007: David Pogue has posted a follow-up iPhone FAQ and John Gruber has posted his musings on “OS X”.

I wonder what has Cisco so upset about the iPhone that they’ve announced they’re going to sue Apple.

I was going to post an update about this — they’re suing over trademark infringement.
