AG-HVX200
Courtesy of Panasonic

Apparently a sighting of the AG-HVX200 in Canada is incredibly rare. The suggestion was that those of us at the VidCom HD Open House may have been in the presence of the only one!

The demo was geared toward sales, but those of us bold enough to approach the reticent beast, were able to get a little bit of hands-on time. In the limited time I had with it, the HVX handled much like any other camcorder in it’s class, which of course is part of Panasonic’s pitch. I was a little taken aback at how flimsy the LCD hinge felt, but this was an engineering model (series 11) not a final production unit.

As you might expect variable framerate, DVCPRO HD and P2 were the big ticket items, as it is these that set the HVX200 apart from the competition. Both technologies have caught my eye and I’m looking forward to working with them.

My favourite part of the presentation involved the revelation* that the HVX200 is a “camputer” as it runs a version of Linux!

[*Of course now that I’ve Googled it, I realise that it’s old news to most! I’ll be living back under my rock if you need me…]
