Got the Moves

With all the chatter over the last few days about the recent Shake update and what it means, I remain most curious about Apple’s investment in FxPlug. This is a modern technology that has already received endorsement from some well-respected folk who believe in its longevity. Now that it’s been announced that forthcoming versions of FCP will utilise FxPlug, as others have speculated, I would be very surprised if we don’t see that leveraged in some form in the “next generation of Shake” [Emphasis mine]*.

It wouldn’t be the first time that Apple have rebuilt an application** from the ground up—DVD Studio Pro underwent a radical transformation between versions 1.x and 2.0. The consensus is that, though the original DVDSP was revolutionary in a number of ways, the changes improved the app and immeasurably. The compositing features in the revised DVD Studio Pro pre-date Motion, but now underpin the seamless integration of the two applications.

I’ve mentioned the upcoming Introduction to Motion 2 course that’s scheduled to run 29-30 July at Emily Carr Institute before. If you’re new to Final Cut Studio and have yet to explore the other applications in the suite, or if you use Motion and would like to solidify your existing knowledge of the application, there are still places available in the class.

The 2-day course covers a comprehensive overview of the application. You’ll learn about the application interface, particles, blend modes, layer organization, fundamental multi-layer editing techniques, and advanced text effects.

The cost is currently CDN$595 + gst, and includes the APTS: Motion 2 book by Damian Allen and the Level 1 exam fee.

*This is a quote from an email that is appearing on a number of web sites reportedly from Apple to current Shake Maintenance Agreement holders.

**Especially one that they acquired at that—Shake came to Apple as part of Apple’s acquisition of Nothing Real, and DVDSP the acquisition of Astarte.
