Title Challenge

A short while ago Patrick Inhofer of Fini, posted the 2006 edition of his “Avid versus Final Cut” treatise. At the time it picked up a few notices around the web, but within a matter of days Patrick pulled the section of the article in which he addresses SAN integration.

It’s restored now, and the verdict is good. Previously, FCP network solutions were deemed inferior to Avid Unity, but with the advent of Xsan, Patrick believes that, in this respect at least, the Apple technology is competitive both in terms of capabilities and price—Xsan solutions actually tend to be less expensive.

Other topics addressed by the article include multicam editing, media management, colour correction tools, and the structure of product line. The verdict overall is that for the most part the two systems are competitive, and in fact the real issue is the talent and skills of the editor.

If an endorsement for Patrick’s views were needed, the article has been reposted on Ken Stone’s web site!

For more information on Xsan you should check out Apple Pro Training Series: Xsan Quick-Reference Guide, now in its second edition and the Xsanity web site.
